Insurance Issues

Health Insurance

If you don't live in a cave in the US, you have been bombarded with the health insurance debate to the point of pain.  Everyone seems to be talking about what the government may do to help us (or hurt us) with the high cost of health insurance.  No matter what happens, it is a fact that costs for medical care will continue to have a significant impact on our finances.

The chances that we will remain totally healthy,

needing no medical care, decrease as we add years to our age.  Therefore the need for us to have insurance to protect us from possible financial disaster arising from an unplanned medical event becomes more and more important.  The unfortunate side of this is that insurance companies know that our risk of needing medical attention increases with age and therefore charge accordingly for their plans.  You could be one of the lucky ones who has group plan coverage through work that provides coverage regardless of age, but most of us don't have this luxury and even more of us lose this coverage when we stop working.  Until we reach age 65, there are few alternatives to sucking it up and paying the insurance company rates or face the chance of being wiped out by an unforeseen medical disaster.

There is a lot of criticism surrounding Medicare, but the main thing it offers is medical coverage that is independent of age and independent of pre-existing medical conditions.  This is significant to the majority of us.

This section offers two articles that can help you if you are one of the unfortunate people that don't work for GM, Ford, or for the government and have a plan that comes with your job.  The first article talks about health insurance in general for people under 65.  The second article talks about Medicare.
